This article is based on the real-world printing experience shared by our customer, Threepwood Hastenbach, who tested YXPOLYER Olive Green ASA Filament and provided detailed feedback on its print quality, weather resistance, printing requirements, and overall performance.
In the original review, Threepwood described it as “A Strong Choice for Outdoor Prints”, Below, we’ve organized that experience into a practical guide for anyone considering ASA filament for outdoor or functional 3D printing.
- Why ASA for Outdoor Prints?
For parts exposed to the elements, Threepwood found ASA to be a strong alternative to standard materials such as PLA or PETG.
The material is designed to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight, UV rays, rain, and heat without easily fading or becoming brittle, making it well suited for car accessories, hiking gear, structural parts, and other outdoor projects.
- Print Quality & Finish
The Olive Green ASA produced a professional satin-matte finish that blends naturally into outdoor applications.
Threepwood also reported consistent layer adhesion, strong bonding, good rigidity, and solid bridging and overhang performance for a higher-temperature filament.
- Printing Setup: 250–260°C & Enclosure Recommended
ASA requires more controlled printing conditions than PLA.
Threepwood printed at approximately 250–260°C and recommends using a heated bed and an enclosure or heated chamber to maintain temperature, improve adhesion, and reduce warping.
For larger or longer prints, make sure your printer can maintain the required temperatures before starting.
- AMS, Odor & Support Removal
The filament fed smoothly through AMS and other multi-material systems without snagging. Its flow was described as similar to PLA, although ASA requires higher printing temperatures.
While the formulation is low odor, Threepwood still noticed some smell compared with PLA, so proper ventilation is recommended.
The strong material bonding can also make supports harder to remove if they are placed too close to the model. Leaving a small support gap in your slicer settings can make removal easier.
- Final Thoughts
Based on Threepwood’s experience, YXPOLYER ASA combines weather resistance, strong layer adhesion, rigidity, smooth feeding, and a professional matte finish for demanding outdoor and functional prints.
The trade-off is that ASA requires more preparation than PLA, particularly an enclosed printing environment, heated bed, higher printing temperatures, and adequate ventilation.
For users looking to move beyond basic PLA and print parts intended for outdoor, automotive, hiking, or long-term functional use, these characteristics make ASA a material worth considering.
